Day Five - Rock Stars, Taiwanese Opera, and The Big Concert

Updated: Oct 20, 2019

We began Friday by returning to Yilan Jr. HS to perform a full concert. On Monday, we had done a joint performance with their group and only performed one tune ourselves. This time, we performed our full program and shared the stage with a wonderful Indonesian Fusion group that puts together rock and jazz with traditional Javanese Dance and Gamelan playing. In addition to really playing well, these musicians were very kind and even jammed with our students prior to our performances.

One thing I have not written about has been the "rock star" treatment we have gotten in Taiwan. I do not mean just the fabulous accommodations and food the city of Yilan has provided (I will devote a whole post just about the food at the end of our trip), but the authentically excited response we have received from audiences, especially the young ones. One would think the Beatles entered the hall when we played. We are continuously flocked to by students wanting pictures and autographs. Some of our young gentlemen have been getting spoiled with extra female attention they have gotten. Additionally, the audience participation (like clapping) is energetic and authentic. I programed an arrangement of a Taiwanese folk song, "Spring Breezes," as an encore. The smiles and enthusiasm the crowd shows when we play this piece has been amazing. Although, the chicken vendor in the traditional market told me I was taking it too slow.

After our concert at Yilan Junior High School, we went to the Yilan Taiwanese Opera Museum. Here, we got a tour from a Taiwanese opera performer (dressed in complete traditional garb). The museum displayed many of the props and puppets used in the performances. An opera excerpt demonstration was given. At the end, everyone was able to dress in a Taiwanese opera costume. Very Informative, and VERY Cool!

Today was also our turn to perform our program for the Main Festival Concert Series in the Yilan Performance Hall. We had a dress rehearsal in the afternoon and then performed in the evening. It was a wonderful production, complete with audio visuals, lighting, smoke machines, etc. To top it off, our students really brought their "A - Game" and delivered a top-notch, high quality performance. I could not be prouder! Go Rockets!!!!
